Cockpit Coaming Riser

The coaming will be built up in two procedures. The first is to build the coaming riser. A bunch of 2" pieces were cut from leftover cedar strips. The pieces are (hot melt) glued vertically along the inside of the cockpit opening with carpenters glue to attach the vertical edges of the strips to each other.

After the coaming riser is strengthened with fiberglass (outside and inside), a lip will be attached to outside of the riser.

Glassing the Coaming Strips - Jan 11, 2013

First, the coaming strips and the surrounding deck area were cleaned up and sanded (photo at left). Next, (photos below) a fillet was created to enable a more gradual transition from the deck to the cockpit coaming. I used 18 strands of the 4 oz cloth and epoxyed them into the corner. Then, to strengthen the joint, a 1-1/2" strip of glass cloth was put on, followed by a 4" strip.
